Battlestar Galactica Blueprints

From LoveToKnow Sci-Fi

Battlestar Galactica blueprints are for those fans who want more than just the visuals they see on television or can imagine in the novels. There are many types of ships in Battlestar Galactica and some blueprints are simple modifications of one class of ship. For example, a support vehicle has one basic design, but with one or two adjustments, the ship takes on a different function and name.

Ship Classes

You can find blueprints online for a few different classes of ships.

  • Colonial Capital ships
  • Cylon Captial ships
  • Colonial small craft
  • Cylon small craft.

Where Can I Find Battlestar Galactica Blueprints?

  • Ship Schematics lets you view official blueprints and unofficial Battlestar Galactica Blueprints of ships. The unofficial blueprints are artists conceptions based on novels and television. The official blueprints are from the drawing board of artists associated with the companies that render the ships. This site also has schematics for Star Trek and Babylon 5.
  • If you'd like to purchase a set of tangible prints for your Sci-Fi collection, then go to eBay. You usually can find vintage blueprints from the 1978 version of Battlestar Galactica.
  • Interested in more than just Battlestar Galactica Blueprints for ships? At Tecr you can view blueprints for just about anything on Battlestar Galactica from power plants to weapons to engines. This website even goes further by providing images from the television show with measurements. This can give you a sense of depth and height to the ships and other devices used. Besides blueprints, you can find a massive amount of information about the world of Battlestar Galactica.
  • Since eBay sells mostly used items, the Battlestar Galactica blueprints you find may not be in the best condition. Amazon is your best bet for a new collection of blueprints. The blueprints are highly collectible items, so don't be surprised if you find the collection selling for $200-$400. The used collections are considerably less and you might want to buy these if you plan on handling them often.

Can I Make My Own?

If you have AutoCAD or a 3D rendering program like Maya or any similar blueprint making program, then your answer is yes. All you need is to know how to use the program and to bring your talent in using the program. Use the following steps to create your blueprint.

  1. Find pictures of the Battlestar Galactica ships. You can do this one of two ways. Locate them on the Internet or, if you have the show on DVD, take screenshots of the show and digitize them to your computer. Try of find many different angles of the ships for a complete blueprint. Use them as for reference points.
  2. Fire up your program and start drawing lines. If you are using a 3D program, then your first task is to begin with a frame. You are still drawing lines, but you'll end up with a 3D frame, rather than a "stick-ship" if you use AutoCAD.
  3. Pay close attention to scales. To get real detailed, find pictures with people or other ascertainable heights and widths. For example, if there is an actor in the scene, you can look up his height on IMDB. Some programs let you determine height and distances within the program. You can use this feature to figure out scales.
  4. Place the correct textures on the ships. You'll need to play around with the texture tools to see which looks the best. If you're daring, then modify textures a little for more creativity. Be wary about posting these online because Battlestar Galactica fans will criticize your blueprint.

Making a blueprint is more involved than the above three steps. Hopefully they are enough to get your started and understand how detailed the creators made each ship in the Galactica universe.

Go Beyond

After watching the show, you might feel the need to know more about Battlestar Galactica. Go beyond the show by going behind the scenes. Viewing blueprints is a great way to understand how the ships are designed. It may help you appreciate how they are used.
