Battlestar Galactica Ships
From LoveToKnow Sci-Fi
In the 1970s version of Battlestar Galactica, the Colonials (humans) escaped the Cylons by retreating to the stars in a ragtag fleet of Battlestar Galactica ships. In the new Battlestar Galactica the remnants of the human Colonials are still trying to outrun the Cylons while searching for the 13th Colony of Man, a habitable planet also known as Earth.
Basis for the Cylon War
Science fiction fans have followed the ever-evolving philosophy of the Battlestar Galactica theory upon which the popular series is set. In this universe, viewers have come to accept the Cylons as a reality that makes the story premise work. These creatures are a mechanical race created by the humans to make life in the Twelve Colonies easier for the humans. But the Cylons had plans of their own leading to a rebellion in which they killed their masters. Eventually, when they declare an armistice, the Cylons leave to build a new life for themselves. Apart from the humans, they evolve into a variety of artificial beings including both robotic and biological forms that look human. The problem for the humans is that even though the Cylons are gone, they've never lost their hatred for the Colonials. This hatred spurs a Cylon plan to wipe out the Twelve Colonies; a plan that comes to fruition.
The Colonial Survivors
The Twelve Colonies are obliterated by nuclear bombardment. After the Colonies fall to the Cylons, a remnant of survivors escape aboard the last battlestar along with the small fleet of ships they are able to salvage. This small fleet sets out into unexplored space with hopes of finding the legendary 13th Colony of Man. Along with the various smaller fighters and shuttles, the following Colonial Capital Ships make up the Colonial fleet:
Colonial Capital Ships
| Ship Name | Class |
| Colonial Heavy 798 - Colonial One | Luxury Liner |
| Colonial Movers | Freighter |
| Firefly Model 03 | Transport |
| Galactica | Battlestar |
| Gemini | Freighter |
| Majahual | Mineral Ship |
| Mercury | Battlestar |
| Nova | Battlestar |
| Valley Forge | Agroship |
Battlestar Galactica
The well-armed Galactica is the last known battlestar to survive the Cylon attack. It escapes with Admiral William Adama at the helm. Galactica houses the last of the Colonial Military and is responsible for protecting the civilian colonial ships which managed to escape with them. This involves launching attacks against Cylon targets as well as trying to outrun them. This huge ship also houses a compliment of Viper spacecraft.
In the new or re-imaged Battlestar Galactica TV series, Galactica the battlestar is drastically different from the Galactica of the 1978 television show. While the ribbed outer design somewhat conforms to the earlier version, the interior design is vastly different. The newer Galactica includes updated equipment including the DRADIS system which operates much the same as modern-day combat radar. It provides a detailed overview interface marking the positions of potential threats. Defensive upgrades include a few hundred kinetic energy turrets and a few prized nukes.
How Battlestar Galactica Ships Move Through Space
Battlestar Galactica ships move through space using FTL (Faster than Light) drives. This fictional technology takes time to spool up as the crew initiates an automatic start up procedure before making a planned jump. In the Colonial ships, this takes time while the drive is spooling, and the technology does not allow them to be spooled and in a state of readiness for long periods. This makes staying ahead of the Cylons strategically challenging for the Colonials. When forced to make a quick or unplanned jump, the Colonial ships run navigational risks that can take their ships off course and into unknown space where navigational hazards pose more unexpected threats. Cylon FTL drives, on the other hand, are more sophisticated than those on the Colonial ships.
Cylon Ships
Among the ships on Battlestar Glactica, Cylon ships schematics are more advanced than the Colonial ships and are able to make longer and more accurate jumps than comparable Colonial ships.
Basestar
The Cylon ships comparable to a Battlestar are known as Basestars or base ships, though they are substantially bigger than the Colonial battlestars and are equipped with the following weapons:
- Mega-Pulsars
- Laser Turrets
- Missile Turrets
The Basestars also house a fleet of smaller fighters known as Raiders.
Resurrection Ships
The Cylon Resurrection Ship is a huge vessel that resurrects copies of humanoid Cylons who have lost their lives. The premise behind this technology is that when the humanoid Cylon dies, their consciousnesses is downloaded into a new copy of their original body. This ship type was created so the Cylons would have a way to regenerate as they move further and further from their home world, because the downloading range is limited. Having the Resurrection Ship nearby, allows humanoid Cylons hiding among the humans on the Colonial ships to download their consciousnesses into a new body if they are killed. The Resurrection Ships harbor copies of a number of Cylon models and function through technology linked to the Resurrection Hub. If the hub is destroyed, the Resurrection Ships can no longer function and when a Cylon dies, they die.
The technology and humanity of Battlestar Galactia is complex and anything but predictable. The writers have done a fine job of creating ships that present a believable setting for humans and Cylons alike as viewers travel deeper into the Battlestar Galactica universe.
