Cast Members of Star Trek Enterprise

From LoveToKnow Sci-Fi

The cast members of Star Trek: Enterprise mixed well-known actors such as Scott Bakula (Quantum Leap, Chuck) with familiar faces such as Jolene Blalock (Stargate: SG-1) and Connor Trinneer (Stargate: Atlantis) and up-and-coming actors such as Linda Park and Dominic Keating. Star Trek: Enterprise aired on the now defunct UPN network for four seasons. When it ended in 2005, it was the first time in nearly twenty years that no new Star Trek episodes aired on television.

Cast Members of Star Trek Enterprise: The Captain

Heading up the cast of Star Trek Enterprise was actor Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathon Archer. He is the forerunner of more familiar Starfleet captains such as Kirk, Picard, Sisko and Janeway. Bakula’s challenge involved playing a human captain from Earth where no Starfleet existed yet. The show used the film Star Trek: First Contact as a jumping off point. Archer is an explorer, a deep thinker and an inventor. He is desperate to get out into the universe and to see what is there. He both admires and resents the Vulcans, a combination that leads to friction with his ship’s XO Sub-Commander T’Pol (Jolene Blalock).

Bakula brought name recognition and an established fan base from his years on Quantum Leap. His warm, on-screen persona combined with his gentle demeanor made him an excellent Captain for a show set 100 years before the time of Kirk, the Federation and Starfleet. This exploratory element harkened back to the early days of the original Trek series as conceived by Gene Roddenberry. Archer’s good ol’boy demeanor belied a high level of intelligence, compassion and savvy.

Jolene Blalock

According to the IMDB, Blalock was a huge fan of the original Star Trek while growing up, and her favorite character was Spock (Leonard Nimoy). Although she nearly turned down the role of Sub-Commander T’Pol, she is recognized today largely for her role as the Vulcan first officer. Her character received mixed reviews, initially, particularly because her uniforms were more Seven of Nine than Spock, but Blalock’s cool portrayal of the logical Vulcan never rang false. Blalock’s other genre role included that of Teal’c’s lover Ishta on two episodes of Stargate: SG1.

Connor Trinneer

Trinneer earned a tremendous fan following for his character, the southern engineer Captain Charles Tucker the Third, or "Trip" as he is affectionately known. Trinneer’s delivery is a mixture of DeForest Kelley’s Bones and Jimmy Doohan’s Scotty. He’s Archer’s best friend, and the chemistry shared by the two actors makes that believable. Trinneer and Blalock also shared a unique chemistry that the writers took advantage of, particularly when Trip developed a romantic interest in his logical superior officer.

Enterprise’s Crew

The big three are often the focus of many of Enterprise’s storylines, but the cast includes other notable faces and characters.

Dominic Keating

English-born Dominic Keating delivered a savvy accent and sharper demeanor than his co-stars. His role as Security Chief often put him at odds with other members of the crew, and Keating held his own well. Keating is also featured in other genre shows including Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Heroes.

Linda Park

Korean born Linda Park speaks three languages (English, Korean and Spanish) which are appropriate for her role as Ensign Hoshi Sato. As Sato, it was Park’s job to translate the numerous unknown languages encountered by the Enterprise crew. Sato would also be instrumental in the development of a translator program that would eventually become the Universal Translator. Park’s delivery of difficult lines and languages included Klingon, Andoran and Romulan.

Anthony Montgomery

Actor Anthony Montgomery auditioned for two roles on Voyager before being brought back and cast as Ensign Travis Mayweather on Enterprise. Montgomery’s role is that of the earnest younger officer. His character is a boomer, or a space-born human who lives more on ships than on planets. Montgomery played the earnest Ensign with unrestrained charm and boyish good looks.

Veteran Doctor

The role of the doctor is a critical role on all variations of Star Trek, with Enterprise being no different. Dr. Phlox, an alien, is played by the cast’s only other veteran actor: John Billingsley. Billingsley’s resume, before and after Enterprise, is extensive. He appears in numerous genre pieces including: Angel, The Profiler, The Pretender, The X-Files, Stargate: SG-1, Ghost Whisperer and True Blood just to name a few.

In a tongue and cheek moment, Billingsley’s character on SG-1 is a scientist that is also a huge fan of Star Trek and Vulcans. His rather nerdy take as a researcher is very humorous. As Phlox, Billingsley wore a lot of make-up and prosthetics, but played the gentle, firm and determined physician with aplomb.
