In 1997, the first Harry Potter book was published in the UK. Called Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in Britain, and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone when it was published in the US the next year, the book told the story of an orphan being neglected by the family of his aunt, and discovering he has magical abilities and is enrolled in the magical boarding school Hogwarts, where all wizards and witches learn their craft.

Famously written by a single mom 'on the dole' (welfare for US readers), the series made J. K. Rowling a billionaire in US dollars, perhaps the first person to become that wealthy on writing alone. She is widely reported to be worth more now than the Queen.

The story resonated with young and old alike, and the weirdest thing happened. Kids who normally would never pick up a book unless it was to move it out of the way of their computer or videogame sat down and read it. And they read each subsequent installment of Harry Potter's life. As the books ballooned to six, seven and eight hundred pages, parents watched with shock as kids stayed up all night to find out what happens to Harry and his friends, Ron and Hermione, as they go against the evil Lord Voldemort.

Why this particular series captured the reading public is unclear. It could plausibly be argued that the plots are tame compared to Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, or C. S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia. Whatever the case, there are as many adults as children eagerly awaiting the seventh, and final, installment of the Harry Potter series.
