Science fiction movies have had their ups and downs. Back in the day of A-movies (name stars, good budgets, lots of PR) and B-movies (low budgets, no-name stars, cheesy sets), sci-fi movies would typically fall in the 'B-movie' category.

When movie theaters showed 'double features', the B-movie typically went first, so in theory you didn't have to show up until the 'real' feature's show time, and the first feature was a cheap western, a creaky monster movie, or a 'space opera'.

Odd, isn't it, that most people remember the cheap science fiction movies today more than the 'a-list' movies they took second place to?

Flash Gordon, The Thing, The Blob; the science was excreable and the acting... well, it could hardly be called acting at all. Guidewires were visible, the cameraman cast a shadow, boom mikes appeared and disappear, but we didn't care.

Of course, science fiction movies became more respectable. With the advent of the Star Trek franchise on television and the Star Wars saga on the big screen, science fiction went uptown, and today, sci-fi movies are the highest grossing films of all time, overshadowing previous record-holders such as Gone With the Wind.

Now sci-fi movies influence our culture in ways that mainstream movies rarely do. Everyone has a position on whether to take the red pill or the blue pill (Matrix), and nobody hasn't ever said at least once, "Use the Force, Luke!" (Star Wars: A New Hope or Star Wars IV)

In this category, we share our love of science fiction movies, from the cheesy B's of yesteryear to the mega-budget event of the year.
