Story line

This story begins with a boy of 15 named Eragon who comes upon a mysteriously rock, that he later finds out is a dragon’s egg. The egg hatches and a sapphire dragon pops out. Eragon asks for more information of dragons from the village storyteller Brom who has great knowledge of the past before the corrupt king Galbatorix came to power and more importantly he had a vast knowledge of dragons. Through him Eragon picks out the name Saphira for his dragon.

Later 2 mysterious strangers come to his village asking of the mysterious rock Eragon had found. After finding out Eragon had it, they burned his house after looking for it. Luckily Saphira protected Eragon from them but Eragon's uncle Garrow died in the fire. Eragon begins gathering supplies so he can pursue and kill the strangers. While gathering supplies he finds out that Brom has found out about Saphira.

Brom asks to accompany Eragon on his quest and in return, he will teach Eragon all he knows of dragons and there powers, and help kill the strangers. Brom tells Eragon that the strangers were called Ra’zac, and were inhuman with incredible strength that was used by King Galbatorix to find dragons. As they move on Eragon discovers magic in a desperate fight with one of Galbatorix’s minions. Brom begins teaching Eragon about magic and how to use it.

They finally encounter the Ra’zac when ambushed. During the ambush Brom sacrifices himself to save Eragon. Before he dies he tells Eragon a great secret, which I will not reveal. Eragon then starts out to join the Varden, a group of rebels who opposed the king. On the way he befriends Murtagh, a mysterious man also seeking the Ra’zac. When captured by a guard Eragon escapes from jail and finds an elf that is very rare, as elves have hidden themselves for hundreds of years and none have been captured before.

He rescues the elf, who falls into a comma and will not awaken unless given an antidote found only with the Varden. As they head to the Varden a huge army of Galbatorix’s soldiers pursues them. When they reach the Varden they are greeted by the leader of the Varden who asks of Eragon’s and Saphira’s help in an upcoming war that cannot be won without them. If you would like to know the outcome and learn the book in greater detail you will have to read the book for yourself.

What I thought of it

Trust me when I say that this is one of the greater books of the decade, which I would rate up there with Harry Potter and the Series of Unfortunate Events. I liked this book because of the great amount of action and fighting, the detailed workings of magic, and of course the dragons. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys magic, dragons, medieval wars, and mythical creatures.
