Playing a fantasy roleplaying game is a fun way to get yourself out of your head and into a world where you can do anything but making up people can be a hard thing to do but the process is simplified when you use a fantasy character generator.

What is a Fantasy Character Generator

Dungeons and Dragons from TSR has been around since the early 70’s but Gary Gygax, the game’s creator and father of modern roleplaying, passed on in 2008 but his games live on. With the purchase of TSR by Wizards of the Coast came new rules and more ways to create characters that made it confusing. These programs exist to take the edge off creating a character in a game where the rules can be hard to decipher as with Dungeons and Dragons and D20 Modern. These programs are also great for those who run games to easily create NPC’s (or non-player characters) or to quickly fill-in a missing player slot.

Character generators exist as a downloadable software program that you keep on your computer but they can also be used directly through your chosen web browser.

  • Hero Machine is a great artistic rendering program where you can use classic comic book style art to create your hero. The HeroMachine engine is used directly on their web site without having to download anything and they have several versions available for download:

Basically you read the web page (you’re allowed to print it too) and follow the instructions rolling your dice.   • NPC Character Generator by the FrenchGuys is a simple online generator that’s great for game master’s to create characters to pit against their normal players. You get general information each character like their profession, name and a very basic physical description. Also available from their site is a name generator and an outfit generator.
  • If you are a roleplayer then you need to visit the Seventh Sanctum web site because it is a clearing house for generators from anime, being and characters to spells and equipment.
  • Hexicon is a newer pen and paper style roleplaying game that isn’t expensive to get. Their web site offers a handy character creation software program to use with the game. Creative players will be able to use the program and transfer the information generated to many other roleplaying games.
  • Hero Stuff is all about randomly creating fantasy characters. You can roll dice and make names, randomly put together a character, choose skills and several other options. The web-based program is very basic and easy to use.
  • Roleplay Assistant is a shareware program that allows you create your character head to toe. The program is compatible with several roleplaying games including:
    • Star Wars
    • Cyberpunk
    • Advanced Dungeons and Dragons
    • Alternity
    • Rolemaster
    • D20 Modern

No matter what your needs are there is a program available for you even if all you want to do is randomly create weather conditions, magic items or entire parties of monsters, NPC’s and PC’s alike. Most of the programs are free for you to use or unlimited use shareware.
