Female Character Names in Fantasy

From LoveToKnow Sci-Fi

Finding the right female character names in fantasy can be a challenge. Whether you're writing a fantasy, or looking for the right name for your avatar while gaming or in an online forum, a fantasy character generator can serve as a useful tool.

Choosing a Name that Fits as a Writer

Creating a fantasy character, in writing, is a process. It starts with an original concept and grows into a full-fledged individual with a history, likes, dislikes, flaws and strengths. Sometimes it is easiest to use a temporary name to hold your character's place in the manuscript, until you know them. Even when you do find the right name, in some instances a character may outgrow the name you've given them as they continue to develop and take on a life of their own. It can be compared to a caterpillar as it transforms within its chrysalis. When it emerges, it is no longer called a caterpillar. If your character outgrows her name, don't hesitate to give her a new one.

Right for Temperament and Personality

The two basic types of character are good and evil. However, no character should be all good or all evil. It just doesn't make for an interesting character. Even Glenda, the Good Witch of the South was willing to drop a house on an evil witch.

Along with the foundation of good and evil, character traits and abilities help define who a fantasy character is. For example, the name Akantha means "sharp, pointed, or thorned." Sounds like a great antagonist no matter what form she takes. The meaning of the name can be very useful in reminding you of your character's underlying personality.

Right for the Setting

Not only does the name you choose for your female fantasy character have to fit the character's personality and temperament but it should also fit the setting. We've discussed the fact that the name you choose for your princess would be different than the name of your evil shapeshifter but that doesn't deal with setting. An example would be a character named Maggie Mercer. Maggie is a contemporary name. Do you expect to find Maggie in a medieval setting? Perhaps if she is the victim of time travel, yes, but other than that a name like Lady Katherine Vazquez or Erika Flores might be better suited.

Choosing a Name that Fits as a Gaming Geek

Writers aren't the only ones looking for female fantasy names. When it comes to choosing female character names in fantasy games, one of the problems is trying to find a name that isn't already in use. Just because people in the real world have labeled a gamer as a geek doesn't mean that will be reflected in the name they choose. A true geek will use the default name provided, while the creative geek will look for something more unique. Using a female character name generator can prevent wasting time trying to figure out the name you want to use.
