How Many Movies Will There Be?

Although the author of the Harry Potter books, J. K. Rowling, wrote seven books to complete the series, there will be eight films covering the same time line. The length and dense plotting of the final books, and the addition of some important back-story missing from the earlier films, will span eight motion pictures in all. The last two films of the series are tentatively scheduled for release in late 2010 and spring of 2011. They will be filmed concurrently in the style of the hugely successfully Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. The Harry Potter film series is the most successful film franchise in history. With only five movies in release in 2008, the cinematic story about the boy who lived had earned more than $4.5 billion worldwide.

Rowling Says

After the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the final installment in the Harry Potter book series, J. K. Rowling revealed that she believes that Dumbledore is gay. In an interview at Carnegie Hall, she made some other interesting statements about the future of other HP characters too:

  • Neville Longbottom Will Not Marry Luna Lovegood - Contrary to popular belief that the fey but loyal Luna Lovegood would make a perfect match for Neville, it is not to be. Neville will eventually marry Hufflepuff's own Hannah Abbot, who becomes the landlady of the Leaky Cauldron Pub.
  • Snape's Headmaster Portrait Will Hang at Hogwarts - Severus Snape's short tenure as Hogwart's headmaster will not be forgotten. Harry will see to it that Snape's portrait takes its place in the Hogwarts headmaster's office.
  • A Change of Heart about Arthur Weasley. Rowling originally planned for Ron's dad, Arthur Weasley, to die in the fifth book, but reconsidered when she realized she wanted to keep Ron's youthful humor intact till the end of the series.

  • Hermione's cat, Crookshanks isn't pureblood cat. It's half Kneazle. No doubt that's what gives his face a flat, squashed look.
  • It should be no surprise that Fred and George Weasley were born on April 1st or April Fool's day.
  • Although it is widely believed that Ginny is short for Virginia, Ginny Weasley, Harry's love interest in the later books, has an unusual name, Ginevra.
  • There is a real train somewhat like the Hogwarts Express. It's the Olton Hall that runs from Scarborough to York.
  • Trevor, Neville Longbottom's frog, isn't a frog in all Harry Potter incarnations. In the Spanish translation, it's a turtle instead.
  • Daniel Radcliffe earned his success. When the role of Harry Potter was first cast, over 16,000 young boys tried out for the part. Another remarkable element in the film series is that the pivotal, young characters have been portrayed by the same actors throughout.
