Ladyhawke

A Medieval Romance

1985's Ladyhawke is a return to the very best kind of epic romance. It takes place in a mythic medieval France, and the story is seen through the eyes of a young thief, Phillipe Gaston, played by Matthew Broderick. Escaping from prison, he is pursued by the guards, he escapes with the help of a mysterious knight, played by Rutger Hauer, who rides with a hawk on his wrist.

The knight is also being pursued, and the thief and mysterious stranger throw in their lots together. Yet at night, the knight and the hawk vanish under spooky circumstances, and a lovely lady, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, appears.

Stalked by a Wolf

Phillipe feels responsible for the lady, and is alarmed to find them stalked by a wolf. Yet the lady has no fear of the wolf; indeed, she seems very fond on him.

The next day, the lady and wolf are gone, and the knight and hawk have returned. Only when the hawk is brought down by a hunter's arrow and they are forced to make haste to seek the help of a strange reclusive monk, played by Leo McKern, does the little thief begin to piece together their story. Because the hawk, under the care of the monk, transforms into the lovely lady before their eyes.

Ladyhawke: Lovers Cursed

The knight was once a Captain of the Guard, Etienne Navarre. He dared to love Isabeau D'Anjou, who was the object of the unholy lust of the Bishop of Aquila. A practitioner of the Dark Arts, the Bishop, enraged at having his dishonourable advances refused in favor of the Captain's far more honorable ones, cast a curse upon the two lovers; that they would spend half of each day as an animal. Thus, at night, Captain Navarre runs as a wolf, while during the day, Isabeau flies as a hawk. The Ladyhawke pair can only meet and touch briefly twice a day, at sunrise and sunset, when for a few seconds, they are both in their human forms.

Phillipe must help the two lovers return to the cathedral to confront the Bishop in their human forms so that the curse can be lifted and the Bishop confounded.

Gorgeous Cast and Locations

While Dutch actor Rutger Hauer is primarily known for playing villains and crazies, he had both the looks and the physique to carry off the heroic knight role in Ladyhawke; the guy just looks great on a horse. Michelle Pfeiffer, always lovely, was particularly luminious as Isabeau. Add a cute and appealing Matthew Broderick to provide both comic relief and youthful resolve, and filming locations all around Italy, and you are guaranteed one beautiful film.

Ladyhawke was directed by Richard Donner, who got his start in the supernatural, with films such as The Omen and 1978's Superman. He went on to direct the Lethal Weapon series in the eighties and nineties.
