Major Kira Nerys

Major Kira Nerys is a Bajoran soldier and first officer aboard the space station Deep Space Nine. Played by actress Nana Visitor, Commander Kira is a former Bajoran resistance fighter who fought against the Cardassians during the occupation. She has a reputation for a short temper and a fierce hatred of Cardassians, though she keeps her anger in check and always performs her duties. She and Benjamin Sisko have a strong working relationship and personal friendship despite the fact that he is the Bajoran religious figure known as the Emissary.
Major Kira Nerys - History
Kira Nerys was born in the Dakhur province of Bajor during the Cardassian occupation of the planet. She grew up with Cardassian rule and developed a fierce hatred of their occupation and race. As a result, Nerys was recruited to the Shakaar underground resistance movement that carried out terrorist attacks against Cardassians on Bajor.
Nerys was originally opposed to the Federation presence on the space station outside of Bajor. Over time her disposition softened and she became a strong supporter of Bajor joining the Federation. She eventually became a well-known figure in the reconstruction of Bajor which led to her position aboard Deep Space Nine.
Major Kira has two brothers, Reon and Pohl, who made a brief appearance as infants in the series. Nothing is known about their history or whereabouts. Her mother, Kira Meru (Bajorans traditionally display the surname before the given name), was believed to have died while Nerys was a child. She later learned her mother was taken by the Cardassians during the occupation as a comfort woman. Meru became advisor to Gul Dukat, one of the leaders of the resistance and later Nerys' arch enemy. Although many Bajorans saw comfort women as traitors, Nerys' father Taban said Meru was making a great sacrifice for Bajor and she was one of the bravest people he knew.
Kira's Relationships
Nerys' several relationships while serving aboard Deep Space Nine became centerpoints of tension in the series. Her first involvement was with Vedek Bareil Antos, a Bajoran religious figure of whom she shared a friendship and admiration for. Vedek Bareil died in a tragic shuttle accident during negotiations with the Cardassians for a peace treaty. Dr. Julian Bashir managed to keep him alive for some time by replacing his organs and eventually half of his brain with artificial replacements. In the end, Vedek Bareil perished, but the peace talks were successful. Nerys mourned him for six months afterwards.
Nerys' long-time friend Edon was her former commander in the Shakaar resistance cell. He later became the First Minister of Bajor, a powerful political figure second only to the religious leader of the planet, the Kai. Nerys fell in love with Edon during a visit to Deep Space Nine. When Keiko O'Brien was injured, Nerys agreed to carry she and Miles' unborn son. Edon was by her side when he was born. The relationship was eventually dissolved but the two remain close friends.
Major Kira and Constable Odo
One of the longest-running romantic interests in Star Trek history, Constable Odo struggled with the feelings he harbored toward Nerys for many years. He was both unsure of how to react to the emotions (being a Changeling) and too stubborn and insecure to act upon them. Nerys shared similar feelings that endured her other romances, though the two did not admit their attraction for quite some time. Odo eventually learned from the holodeck personality Vic Fontaine how to express his feelings toward her. The two finally shared a passionate kiss that started their relationship. Odo and Nerys stayed together until Odo rejoined the Great Link on his homeworld during the series finale.
