Robot Dog Battlestar Galactica

From LoveToKnow Sci-Fi

For a robot dog, Battlestar Galactica the original series used a small replica of a real dog which had brown and furry hair. The pet was suppose to be alien so the creators made the robot dog on Battlestar Galactica resemble a dog and a bear. The pet was crucial to a few episode plots from the original series.

A chimp named Evolution portrayed the robotic Muffit in the original Battlestar Galactica.

Origins

A daggit was a creature on the planet Caprica and the first robot was called Muffit. Boxey, played by Noah Hathaway, was a resident of Caprica and was the owner of Muffit. This domesticated daggit was a living pet, with a heart and functioning organs.

Unfortunately for Muffit, his life is short-lived. In one of the major cities on Caprica, the Cylon race managed a surprise attack. Debris fell on Muffit and killed him, leaving Boxey extremely distraught. The child and his mother make it to the spaceship Rising Star where the mournful child does not eat for days because of his sadness.

Apollo (Richard Hatch), who eventually becomes Boxey's stepdad, seeks to help the boy through his emotional pain so he asks Dr. Wilker to build a replacement robotic daggit. This daggit is named Muffit II. The surprise attack on Caprica eliminated all the daggits so making the prototype is a good thing because many citizens wanted to replace their recently lost daggits.

Daggits performed three vital functions in the Caprican society:

  • Pet and companionship
  • Watch Daggit (protection)
  • Tracker

Being a robot pet, the Doctor had to imprint a picture of Boxey into Muffit II's circuitry so that Boxey could train the daggit.

Robot Dog Battlestar Galactica Episodes

Muffit II got into just as much trouble as any living pet could.

  • In the episode "Saga of a Star World", Boxey and Muffit go to Carillon and exits near a tylium deposit. They are captured by the Ovions but eventually are turned back over to Apollo by their Queen. Soon, the Ovion plot is unraveled when Boxey runs after Muffit out of an elevator. A Cylon Centurion meets them and as they escape Muffit destroys a Centurion by ripping into the leg.
  • In "The Gun on Ice Planet Zero, Part 1" Boxey and Muffit hide in a snowram so they can see the blinding white surface of Arcta. The snowram fails and almost everyone dies from the ensuing cold. Muffit gets out and disappears. The crew actually thinks that this might bring on the Centurions because he is visible. They pass out and when they wake, Muffit has brought them some Thetas. This keeps the team alive and healthy to complete the mission.
  • In "Fire in Space", Boxey trains Muffit to use his nose to find mushies. (Also at this point, Boxey has trained Muffit to wave). Soon, Athena, Boomer and Boxey become stranded in Galactica's rejuvenation building. Muffit's new sniffing ability helps him navigate a twisted path through the ship's air ducts for mask. Muffit also saves a firefighter.
  • In "The Magnificent Warriors", Box and Muffit are allowed to go with a negotiating party from the ship to trade for farming and food supplies. Siress is captured by the Borays and Muffit is used to track the scent back to the Boray's camp.

Other Facts

  • Muffit II was controlled by a chimpanzee named Evolution.
  • The living daggit was played by a dog who was believed to be named Peanuts.
  • The robot costume was designed by John Dykstra and others at Apogee, who were also involved in Star Wars.
  • If there were scenes or periods of time when Muffit required no movement, the crew would use a sturdy mold inside the suit.
  • Two body parts were controlled wirelessly: the ears and the mouth. Everything else was controlled by Evolution.
  • The original robot suit, which there was only one, sold at an action in 2005.
