Season four opens with Clark's return to Smallville, but it isn't the Clark we expect. He's been "re-programmed". Clark's mother, Martha, is determined to save her son and turns to Dr. Swann's emissary for help. Through her, Martha learns about a surprising new form of kryptonite. The fourth season's opener also brings Lana back from Paris along with a new boyfriend. The season concludes with Clark piecing together the true reason he is on earth after he has a nightmare that shows him something awful is going to happen to Smallville. He journeys to the cave to get answers for Jor-El, and his biological father explains that he must bring the three crystals together immediately to avert cataclysmic devastation.
