Misfits in Space
Space Cases is a sci-fi show that aired on Nickelodeon from March 1995 to January 1996, for two seasons of thirteen episodes each. It was co-created by Peter David and Bill Mumy (of Lost in Space fame). The show takes place in the year 2261, and features a cast of characters from Earth and the surrounding planets.
Five Kids, Two Adults, and a Spacy Ship
In the pilot episode, the "space cases," five failing Starcademy students discover a strange alien ship hovering outside their school; while their teacher is out of the room, the kids sneak aboard, and by the time their teacher and assistant principal have pursued them onto the ship they've inadvertently managed to start it up and heading away from the Starcademy at top speed. Just as they're about to turn around and head home, the ship falls through "the white circle," a cosmic fast lane that spits them out on the other side of the galaxy, seven years, four months, and twenty-two days from home. Our Space Cases are stranded on a partially sentient alien ship that will only respond to the students' commands - so now, the failing students have no choice but to pull their act together and get themselves home.
The Space Cases Characters
At the time their adventure begins, the Space Cases are:
Harlan Band (Walter Emanuel Jones), Earther, helmsman and all-around big-headed jerk. His father was a hero in the Spung War, fought approximately eleven years ago, and this fact (plus the fact that his father is now deceased), has made Harlan both (over)confident in his own abilities and more than a little defensive.
Catalina (Jewel Staite), Saturnian, engineering genius in tandem with Suzee, her imaginary (oops! sorry, "invisible") friend. Cat's parents died when she was young, and she began her friendship with Suzee shortly thereafter. Despite the best efforts of the rest of the crew, she refuses to consider the suggestion that Suzee might exist only in her head - they live in parallel dimensions, she insists, and their brain waves happen to be on the same frequency. Between the two of them, Cat and Suzee manage to figure out what's wrong with the ship the vast majority of the time.
