Star Trek: Voyager

The Premise

The Federation starship Voyager with Captain Katherine Janeway (Kathryn Mulgrew) in command enters an area of space known as the Badlands. They are searching for a ship of Maquis rebels that disappeared with a Federation spy on board. The spy is Vulcan Lt. Tuvok (Tim Russ), Janeway's Security Officer and good friend.

To aid in her mission, she has sprung from prison disgraced former Starfleet officer Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill). The neer-do-well admiral's son was drummed out of Starfleet following negligence in an accident and joined the Maquis. Captured and sent to prison, he's their best chance of finding the Maquis in the Badlands. Onboard the ship, the outcast Paris is befriended by Voyager's brand new Ensign Harry Kim (Garrett Wang).

But once in the Badlands, Voyager is seized by a powerful force and hurled an unimaginable distance. They find themselves in the Delta Quadrant on the far side of the galaxy, seventy-five years' travel from home. Casualties include Janeway's first officer, engineer, and the ship's doctor.

In this distant part of space, they encounter the Maquis ship which had been seized by the same force that brought Voyager across the galaxy. The two crews must join forces to uncover the mysterious entity that brought them here.

Cast of Characters

And then the mixed crew of former enemies, Starfleet and Maquis, form the new crew of Voyager for the long trip home. Chakotay (Robert Beltran), Captain of the Maquis vessel, becomes Janeway's first officer. Half-Klingon B'Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson) is the new ship's Engineer. Tom Paris is granted a temporary commission and the job of piloting Voyager. And the ship's Emergency Medical Hologram (Robert Picardo) becomes a full-time doctor with all the quirks and cranks of a human medic.

Joining the crew as local experts are Neelix (Ethan Philips), a trader who becomes the ship's cook, and Kes (Jennifer Lien), a three-year-old from a race with an eight year life span, who is Neelix's love interest and works for the EMH Doctor.

Aliens, friends or foes?

But the Voyager crew doesn't just make new friends in the Delta Quadrant, they also make new enemies. In the pilot episode, they run afoul of the Kazon, a race of bad-hair warrior types who steal technology and set their sights on owning Voyager. Another menace is the Vidiians, a race blighted by a wasting illness, who would be worthy of pity if they didn't deal with their problem by involuntary organ harvesting.

Star Trek: The Next Generation's fearsome enemy the Borg originate in the Delta Quadrant, so it should come as no surprise that Voyager also meets and tangles with these unstoppable bad guys. A surprising outcome, however, is that they wind up with a Borg crewmember, the slinky catsuited Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), who assumes from the Doctor the traditional Star Trek function of exploring 'what it means to be human'.
