Star Trek Characters

From LoveToKnow Sci-Fi

Some Star Trek characters are better known than others. One factor behind character popularity rests in the particular which Star Trek series in the character starred, but most Trekkies have favorites on more than one of the television series.

Star Trek Characters from the Original Series

The original Star Trek television program only aired for three seasons before being canceled but it grew in popularity in syndicated distribution and the characters became iconic.

Captain James T. Kirk: While Captain Kirk is often thought of as the first captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise, he in fact was the second. Captain Christopher Pike was the first in the pilot episode titled The Cage, but when the first regular episode aired, Captain Kirk was at the the Captain's chair.

Spock: Spock is a beloved character who is half Vulcan and half human. He served as the science officer under Christopher Pike and as first officer and science officer under Captain Kirk. Spock brought about dimension and longevity to the Star Trek phenomenon. His Vulcan logic often collided with human emotion to create an interesting dilemma for the entire crew. Because Vulcans live for hundreds of years, the Spock character was able to transcend the hundreds of years between the original series and Star Trek the Next Generation where he appears as Ambassador Spock. Leonard Nemoy, who played the original Spock also played an older version of himself in the most recent Star Trek movie, Star Trek which ties the beloved actors from the original series to the newest actors to play those characters.

Other Favorite Characters from the Original Series

  • Scotty – Montgomery Scott served as the engineer who always pulled a miracle out of his hat to make the ship hold together or go faster.
  • Uhura – Female Communication officer. Her first name is never used until loyal fans learn it is Nyota in the movie Star Trek.
  • Sulu -- Hikaru Sulu served as helmsman.
  • Chekov -- Pavel Andreyevich Chekov served as navigation officer

Star Trek: The Next Generation Characters

When Star Trek the Next Generation aired, the characters appeared in updated uniforms on a new ship, the NCC 1701 D. Many original fans made comparisons to the original series asking if the android officer Data was supposed to be Spock. It didn't take long for fans to recognize the merit of The Next Generation characters to stand on their own. The storylines often tied in events and history from the original series keeping the Star Trek timeline intact.

Next Generation Officers

  • Captain Jean-Luc Picard: Jean-Luc Picard is a Captain with integrity. Like his predecessor if doing the right thing requires disobeying a direct order, he'll do it. Picard's character grows from the first season where it is a well-known fact that he is not comfortable with children on his ship, to becoming a father figure to much of his crew including young Wesley Crusher who becomes an ensign as a teenager.
  • Commander William T. Riker: Riker is Picard's first officer and often referred to as "Number One." Riker is a lady's man when the series opens and to his surprise finds that a woman he loved in the past is also serving as Ship's Counselor.
  • Lieutenant Commander Data: Data is the only android to serve in Star Fleet. His positronic brain is capable of approximately 50 times the identifiable storage capacity of the human brain, and while he is superior to humans in many ways, he longs to be human.
  • Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge – Chief engineer. Blind at birth, his visor technology lets him see even more than the unaided human eye.
  • Lieutenant Worf -- a Klingon from the house of Mogh who was raised by humans when his family was killed on Khitomer. His Klingon blood and traditions often conflict with human ways, but his disciplined ways help keep his behavior in check most of the time.
  • Commander Beverly Crusher – Ships doctor. She's the widow of Jack Crusher who served with Jean-Luc Picard when they were younger. Jean-Luc is the one who delivered the news of Jack's death to Beverly years before which creates an unspoken bond between them.
  • Counselor Deanna Troi: A half human half Betazoid officer with the ability to read people's emotions and often offers Captain Picard advice based on this insider information.
  • Wesley Crusher – Starts out the show as a promising young man with a future in Starfleet, but as the show developed, Wesley met a character known as the Traveler and taking him on a transdimensional journey.

A handful of secondary Star Trek characters introduced in The Next Generation made regular guest appearances and in cases like the character known as "Q" gained enough popularity to be carried over to future episodes on Deep Space Nine and Voyager.

Deep Space Nine Characters

This show differed from the others in that it took place on a space station rather than on the Enterprise. Main characters include:

  • Ben Sisko - Captain
  • Kira – A Bajoran colonel in the Bajoran Militia who serves on Deep Space 9 as a Bajoran liaison officer.
  • Constable Odo – Chief of Security and a Changling
  • Quark – Ferengi bartender
  • Miles O'Brien – First appeared on The Next Generation as the transporter chief and came to Deep Space 9 when promoted to Chief of Operations.
  • Dr. Bashir – Chief medical officer
  • Worf – After the destruction of Enterprise, Worf goes to Deep Space Nine to serve. There he meets and marries Jadzia Dax.
  • Jadzia Dax – A joined trill. A simbiont (Dax) lived within Jadzia. This joined race was introduced in The Next Generation.

Voyager

Star Trek: Voyager introduced the first female Captain as a series regular in Kathryn Janeway. Trekkies tended to take a little while to warm to this character, but her crew of Harry Kim, Tom Paris, Seven of Nine, B'Elanna Torres, Neelix and Chakotay offered a rich diversity that kept the show on the air for seven seasons.
