Star Trek Enterprise Theme Song
From LoveToKnow Sci-Fi
In 2001, the Star Trek Enterprise theme song "Where My Heart Will Take Me" polarized Star Trek fans. The use of a lyrical song in the opening credits along with images of various Enterprises, explorers and historical moments in space travel, as well as scenes from Star Trek: First Contact, proved to be a powerful and controversial introduction to the show.
Faith of the Heart: Star Trek Enterprise Theme Song
Typical opening credits of previous Star Treks included the use of the famous quote, "Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the star ship Enterprise, its ongoing mission, to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before." These words were used in conjunction with sweeping instrumental pieces. In Deep Space Nine and Voyager, the words were not used at all. Instead, only the instrumental pieces were used.
By using the song "Where My Heart Will Take Me" producers Brannon Braga and Rick Berman broke with 40 years of Star Trek tradition. The series was set between the events of Star Trek: First Contact and the Original Series. The setting, the musicality and even the character choices as well as the frictions between Vulcans (long-treasured allies thanks to Mr. Spock) and the humans, created a real chasm of opinion between Star Trek fans.
Petitions
So upset by the use of the lyrical melody, as well as the dramatic change in style of the credits, some Star Trek fans began an online petition demanding that the Star Trek Enterprise theme song be removed altogether. The producers tried to mollify the fans by changing the tempo and making it a guitar piece in the third and fourth seasons, but that only served to alienate the fans that liked the song to begin with as well as the fans who hated it.
Those third and fourth season changes drew the ire of critics on all sides. Unfortunately, the show struggled with fans because so many old storylines (done before on other shows) were used, and comparisons to those shows made it difficult to chart its own course. When Manny Coto came aboard as executive producer and writer, he began a series of intriguing storylines that would lead to the formation of the Federation. Unfortunately, it was too little too late for many fans who had already given up on the series.
The Enterprise Soundtrack
In 2002, a soundtrack was released by Decca Records, featuring songs from the pilot episode of Enterprise: Broken Bow. The album also included an enhanced version of Russell Watson’s theme song. The soundtrack is available for purchase and download.
All four seasons of Star Trek: Enterprise are available for purchase. In the 2009, J.J. Abrams Star Trek film, a nod was made to Enterprise when Scotty revealed he was assigned to the backwater station after transporting Admiral Archer’s favorite beagle somewhere into the ether. Admiral Archer (Scott Bakula) was an important architect of the Federation. Some fans have argued that the temporal cold war fought on Enterprise paved the way for Abrams time changing reboot of the franchise.
The song "Where My Heart Will Take Me" was sung by Rod Stewart on the Patch Adamssoundtrack.
