Star Trek Games

From LoveToKnow Sci-Fi

For over a couple of decades, Star Trek has captured a wide audience of science-fiction fans. From Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS) to Enterprise, we have seen a wide range of possibilities like time travel, wormholes, strange beings, multiple planets and interesting technology. Aside from the multitude of movies, books, magazines, toys and collectible items inspired by the great vision of Gene Roddenberry, a large number of games have been created for fans worldwide.

Star Trek TOS

Star Trek games seem to have originated in the late 1970’s. The phenomenon began with Star Trek: The Game in 1977. Players could travel through the universe, visit multiple planets and answer Star Trek trivia. Moving forward to the 1980’s, the first Star Trek Trivia game was created that challenged the fans of the original series. As time past by, technology improved and PC and video games took fans by storm. Titles including Star Trek Armada and Star Fleet Command were popular PC games that involved space combat and real-time strategy. Nintendo (NES), Sega Genesis and Gameboy also released their own comparable titles.

By the year 2000, there were a little over 20 PC games and over 15 video games available for Star Trek fans to enjoy, along with the first on-line game. Since then, the number of PC and video games continues to grow. What will Star Trek gaming have in store for us in the future? I look forward to the possibilities.
