Star Trek Movies
Star Trek has captured sci-fi fans from around the globe. With the introduction of the first Star Trek TV series in the 1960’s we couldn’t get enough. Comic books, cartoons, toys and novels were not sufficient. Star Trek movies had to be created. Star Trek the Motion Picture was released in 1980, followed by The Wrath of Khan in 1982 and Search for Spock in 1984. In 1985, a new Star Trek TV series began, The Next Generation, which would inspire four Star Trek movies- Generations (1994), First Contact (1997), Insurrection (1998), and Nemesis (2002). Since then fans have been waiting for another Star Trek movie. Is there one on the horizon? Multiple articles on the web have suggested a possibility of a prequel trilogy. Others say there may be another Next Generation movie in a couple of years. Fans will be waiting with bated breath.
In the meantime, here’s some information about Star Trek movies already in existence.
Star Trek – The Motion Picture (1980)
This is the first of the Star Trek movies based on the original series. Captain Kirk and his crew have been assigned to investigate the mysterious destruction of three Klingon vessels. What is it, and why is that strange force moving its way towards Earth?
Star Trek- The Wrath of Khan (1982)
On an exploratory mission, Chekov and another crewman accidentally discover the ship of the Botany Bay on Seti Alpha 4- a group of genetically altered supermen and women left on the planet by Kirk many years before. If you recall the classic Star Trek episode called “Space Seed”, this is where we first meet Khan, a ruthless dictator who wanted to bring “order” to the planet Earth with his own abuse of power. In this movie, there are some great battle scenes, good lines, and the introduction of the Genesis project created by Kirk’s son David.
Star Trek – The Search for Spock (1984)
After the death of Spock, the crew of the Enterprise is devastated. Bruised and battered, they take the ship back to Star Base. But all is not lost. Kirk and Spock’s father Sarek discover that Spock’s eternal soul (or Katra) has been placed in Dr. McCoy’s own mind! Going against Star Fleet orders, Kirk , Scotty, Sulu, Chekov and McCoy steal back the Enterprise to go to Genesis, the experimental planet where Spock’s coffin was previously dispersed. The strong cohesion of the crew must work together against all odds to bring back their friend.
Star Trek IV- The Voyage Home (1986)
The Earth is in danger! Strange cylinder-like objects are orbiting the planet causing destructive changes in the weather patterns, and causing havoc worldwide. Captain Kirk and Spock discover that humpback whales are the only species that can communicate with the strange objects. Now they must travel back in time to the 20th century to bring one back before the earth is destroyed. This is one of the few Star Trek movies that has a lot of humor throughout.
Some memorable moments are:
- Spock uses the Vulcan grip to stop an obnoxious kid who was playing his boom box too loud.
- Kirk tries communicating in slang terms
- Scotty overacting his role as a manager visiting the glass manufacturing plant
- Dr. McCoy gives a woman suffering from dialysis a couple of pills to cure her problem
Star Trek V- The Final Frontier (1989)
Captain Kirk, Spock and McCoy’s vacation is cut short when a Vulcan hijacks the Enterprise to take it on a journey to discover the mysteries of the universe. The Vulcan (who turns out to be a close relative of Spock) has embraced the emotional side of their early ancestors, instead of pure logic. It is an adventure that makes you think about your own spirituality and what it all means.
Star Trek VI- The Undiscovered Country (1991)
An environmental disaster on one of the Klingon planets has opened up the possibility of a peace treaty with the Federation. Kirk has been assigned to escort the Klingon ambassador’s ship to the conference location. On the way there, shots were fired at the Klingon ship from an unknown location and the ambassador is critically injured by a couple of intruders who boarded during the attack. Kirk is blamed for the incident and given a life sentence onto an icy penal colony where life cannot exist on its surface. The crew of the Enterprise must find a way to exonerate Kirk from these heavy charges and try to salvage the shaky relationship with the Klingons.
Star Trek – Generations (1995)
This is the first Star Trek movie with The Next Generation (TNG) crew. It is in the 23rd century. The new Enterprise-B is being christened, and Kirk, Scotty and Chekov are invited to attend the ceremony. During its test run, a strange phenomenon called the Nexus is encountered. Two ships are enveloped in it and the Enterprise-B manages to save most of its crew, but loses Kirk in the process. Moving forward a couple of decades, a determined Dr. Soran obsessed with returning to the Nexus, plans to destroy planets to alter its path to get there. The Nexus turns out to be a place where one can live the perfect life they’ve never had, make different choices etc. In order to set things right, Captain Picard must find Kirk (who now is in the Nexus) to help save the galaxy from ultimate destruction.
Star Trek- First Contact (1997)
The crew of the Enterprise encounters the Borg, who attempts to control the Earth by altering its past. Captain Picard and his crew follow the Borg ship back to the time of first contact, when the first earth vessel encounters an alien life form. In this story, we meet Kocran, the developer of the warp drive and first in earth’s history to speak to a being from another world.
Some memorable moments are:
- Data is seduced by the Borg Queen and given artificial skin
- Captain Picard uses the Holodeck to fool the Borg
- Worf gets dumped into the water during his promotion ceremony aboard a virtual sea vessel in the Holodeck
- Deanna Troi gets drunk trying to convince Cochrane of the importance of making his launch
Star Trek- Nemesis (2002)
Shortly after Deanna and Riker’s wedding, some other exciting news comes to the surface. The Romulans appear to want a peace treaty! During their journey towards the Romulan Empire, a conspiracy develops. On an exploratory mission, several pieces of a robot that looks exactly like Data is found. Also, the leader of the Romulans appears to be human, and looks like Captain Picard. Full of plot twists, this one will keep you guessing until the end.
