Star Trek Ships
From LoveToKnow Sci-Fi
Star Trek ships are space-traveling vehicles that carry passengers and cargo across the galaxy. Most ships in the Star Trek series are capable of faster-than-light travel using warp drives or similar propulsion methods. There are hundreds of ships appearing throughout the Star Trek series, both from alien races and the federation's own ships. Star Trek ships are as unique as the races that designed and pilot them, some created for destruction, some for peace, and some for purposes entirely different.
Federation Starships
The fleet of Federation starships, piloted by members of Starfleet who are largely from Earth, are the most prominent on the Star Trek series. The most famous names are recognized around the world, especially the USS Enterprise, Voyager, and Enterprise D. These ships are just part of a much larger fleet operated by the Federation.
The Federation ships are divided into different classes, each with different characteristics and tasks. Below are just a few of these classifications.
- Ambassador-class – heavy cruiser
- Andromeda-class – explorer
- Centaur-type – light cruiser
- Constellation-class – explorer
- Constitution-class – heavy cruiser
- Daedalus-class – explorer
- Defiant-class – escort ship
- Galaxy-class – explorer
- Hermes-class – scout
- Miranda-class – light cruiser
- Nebula-class – explorer
- New Orleans-class – frigate
- Saladin-class – destroyer
- Wells-class – timeship
- Yorkshire-class – transport
The most famous Star Trek ships found on the television series also fall under these classes:
- USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) – Constitution class (Star Trek: the Original Series)
- USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) – Galaxy class(Star Trek: The Next Generation)
- USS Defiant (NX-74205) – Defiant class (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)
- USS Voyager (NCC-74656) – Intrepid class(Star Trek: Voyager)
The starship found in Star Trek: Enterprise (NX-01) was commissioned before the Federation was formed and therefore has a different classification (NX class).
Romulan Ships
The chilling sound of “Captain, two Romulan Bird of Preys are de-cloacking ahead.” will make anyone break out in a cold sweat. One of the original and most-feared races in the Star Trek universe, the Romulans are a calculating race of warriors, thinkers and scientists. Their starship technology is on-par with that of the Federation, making any unfriendly encounter a tense one.Romulan ships generally carry a cloaking device, onboard machinery that allows the ship to be rendered invisible to sensors and other forms of detection. Here are just a few of the Romulan ship classes found in the Star Trek universe:
- Romulan Bird of Prey – warship
- Romulan Battlecruiser – warship
- Romulan Science Vessel – science vessel
- Romulan Interceptor – scout
- Romulan Scoutship – scout
Klingon Ships
Another early Star Trek species, the Klingons are a warfaring race that travels the galaxy in search of honor and glory. Their starships are battle-hardened machines capable of pounding most other fleets with their heavy weaponry. The Klingons, like the Romulans, have cloaking technology used to surprise the enemy.
Some Klingon ship classes and descriptions:
- K'toch class – scout
- Klingon Battle Cruiser – warship
- Raptor class – scout
- Bird of Prey – warship
Borg Ships
The Borg, part organic life-forms and part machinery, are a hive-based race whose only goal is to assimilate other species into their collective. Their computer-like thinking patterns makes their ship design stale and straightforward. Most of their ships are simple geometric shapes. Their technology is quite advanced, however, as they have taken knowledge from countless assimilated races to better their own.
A few types of Borg vessels:
- Borg cube – unknown classification
- Borg diamond – flagship
- Borg probe – scout
- Borg sphere – scout and escape pod
- Borg tactical cube – tactical cruiser
