About Star Trek Starships

Writing about the ships of Star Trek would take several entries. Entire encyclopedias serve as reference materials for Star Trek starships including:

The ships of the Star Trek universe include starships of the Federation, the Vulcans, the Ferengi, the Klingons, the Romulans, the Dominion, the Borg and multiple other races encountered throughout five live action television series, one animated series, nearly a dozen films and countless novels.

Federation Starships

The most recognizable starship in the Star Trek universe is the interstellar star ship Enterprise in all of her various forms and designations including:

  • Enterprise NX-01
  • NCC-1701
    • In an amusing guest appearance on the Star Trek:The Next Generation episode Relics, Captain Montgomery Scott (portrayed by James Doohan) swore at the holodeck computer that he wanted the bridge of the 'Enterprise, NCC-1701. No bloody A, B, C or D.'

The first shuttle developed by NASA in 1976 was named Enterprise. Star Trek fans everywhere enjoyed the symmetry that the first space passenger vehicle would be named for the Starship that served as the flagship of the Federation. Enterprise, however, is a popular name for military vessels, including a battleship and an aircraft carrier. The latter featured heavily in the fourth Star Trek film titled The Voyage Home as Chekov and Uhura needed to sneak aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, the nuclear powered aircraft carrier, docked in San Francisco.

Starship Luxury

Star Trek starships are elegant vessels, primarily focused on exploration, diplomacy and defense. The initial starships of the early Federation (EnterpriseStar Trek: The Original Series) were stream-lined and carried low crew complements (85 to 400). The primary crew consisted of military officers and enlistees in Starfleet.

Later starships (Star Trek: Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager) are much larger, designed for longer missions, diplomatic conferences and combine battleship status with luxury liners. Crews exceed 1,000 people and feature multiple civilian crew, scientists and medical personnel, including psychologists and diplomats.

In Star Trek, the starships are characters. The relationship between the Captains and their vessels is explored, as is the mourning fans feel when a ship is destroyed. At the end of Star Trek III, the destruction of the Enterprise is necessary to save the crew, but fans everywhere mourned the loss of the ship. She remained a heavily absent figure throughout the fourth film, appearing only at the very end after the crew returned from 1986 to the 23rd century and a new ship could be built.
