Terminator Robot

From LoveToKnow Sci-Fi

In 1984 the silver screen introduced the world to the invincible terminator robot that visited from the future--the year 2029.

Arnold Schwarzenegger the Original Terminator Robot

Arnold Schwarzenegger is the actor responsible for molding the "character" of the original terminator robot. The audience quickly learned that as the Terminator this cyborg was lethal and almost unstoppable. Its mission was to travel back in time to 1984 Los Angeles and to "terminate" a woman by the name of Sarah Connor (played by Linda Hamilton). The robot accesses a local telephone book and goes down the list, systematically killing all the women with the name of Sarah Connor.

The robot seeks to eliminate the future leader of the resistance, John Connor, by killing his mother before he is ever conceived. It's a man against machine theme pumped up on steroids. For sci-fi fans these events aren't hard to follow. We all know changing the past can change to future, and when visitors from the future play in the past this time, the very thing the robot is sent to stop takes place. John Connor is conceived by a human visitor from the future.

An interesting bit of trivia regarding this robot is that O.J. Simpson was one of the people considered for playing the role. He didn't get the part because producers didn't think he could be taken seriously as a cold-blooded killer.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day

In the second movie in the Terminator franchise, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Sarah Connor is hospitalized in a mental ward because she believes in these terminator robots. Her son John is in foster care, and Schwarzenegger returns to his role as a terminator robot. Despite looking like the Terminator in the first movie, this time producers challenged the audience's imagination by making the Schwarzenegger is the protector from the future. His mission is to protect Sarah and her son. Needless to say, Sarah Connor and her teenage son need some serious convincing and it opens the door to a little levity.

While the Schwarzenegger robot plays the good guy, this movie also introduced a whole new concept in evil cyborgs known as the T 1000. This robotic assassin has the capability to look and sound human, but with a twist. As a shape shifter, it transforms its appearance, can recover from physical damage quickly and can mimic sounds including voices almost perfectly.

Terminator Films

The original Terminator film was a surprising success and opened the door for a list of sequels:

  • The Terminator (1984)
  • Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991
  • Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
  • Terminator Salvation (2009)

Television Series

The Terminator saga also found its way onto the TV screen in 2008 in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The story takes place after the events in Terminator 2 as Sarah Connor and her son try to live unnoticed while putting together a plot that will destroy the computer network Skynet.

Terminator Salvation

The robots featured in the latest Terminator film, Salvation, are stronger and faster than ever. While they look almost the same as the Series 800 robots these new improved Terminator robots are known as T-888s or Triple Eights. They are more resilient than their predecessors, with attributes enhanced by more than 25 percent compared to previous models. If you haven't seen the movie yet, here are some of the T-888 capabilities you can look forward to:

  • Can run at speeds higher than 60 mph
  • Armor plating on its back
  • Equipped with thigh blades

You won't be disappointed as the humans try to destroy the T-888. Its endoskeleton is still capable of withstanding just about anything.

If you've enjoyed the Terminator robots in earlier movies, the new improved models will not let you down.
