Twilight by Stephanie Meyer

From LoveToKnow Sci-Fi

The novel Twilight, by Stephanie Meyer, was one of the most popular books of 2008. Twilight, the movie, opened on the weekend of November 22nd, 2008. It brought in over $70 million, making it one of the biggest blockbuster films in 2008.

The Plot of Twilight by Stephanie Meyer

Twilight, by Stephanie Meyer, is the story of a human teenage girl named Bella who moves to Forks, Washington with her father, local Police Chief Charlie Swan. Very early in the story, during her first day at school, Bella meets her true love, Edward Cullen. Her heart warms quickly for the handsome boy, but little does she know that his heart is never warm. In his mystique and oddness, she finds a spark of something she has never felt before. Before long, Bella and Edward fall deeply in love, driving Edward into a vicious inner battle between his natural urges and his unnatural love for a human girl. Since the Cullen family is the "vegetarian" version of vampires, the love story appears to have an inkling of hope. That is until other blood-thirsty vampires come to town and threaten to take away the one human that Edward has fallen in love with.

The Twilight Series

Twilight is the first in a series of novels by Stephanie Meyer. It is an overwhelmingly popular series that has captured the minds and hearts of fans from around the world. Both the twilight series of novels and the Twilight movie are quickly climbing to the ultimate heights of a typical popular cult classic.

Fans of The Twilight Series

Overwhelmingly, fans of Twilight are female. According to polls by film sites such as Fandango, the audience for Twilight the movie was about 75 percent female, and 25 percent of the audience was under 25 years old. Across the Internet, the reaction to the film was swift and clear. Young girls swooned over Robert Pattinson, who played the part of Edward Cullen. They also overwhelmingly expressed disapproval for Kristen Stewart, who played Bella Swan. In most cases moviegoers reported that Kristen didn't act well, or she wasn't right for the part. But underlying most of that criticism seemed to be the hidden desire of every girl to get swept up in the arms of Edward Cullen themselves, and no other girl would ever really be right for that part. Regardless, audiences approved of the film, and over 60 percent said that they would see it again.

Reviews of Twilight the Movie

The twilight movie also received positive reviews from the professional critics. For the most part, critics responded favorably to the filming location, as well as the casting of Pattinson as Edward, Billy Burke as Charlie, Taylor Lautner as Jacob, the Cullen family, and Bella's classmates. Negative marks were noted for the lower level of romance in the movie than in the book. Most critics also thought that the film missed the mark when it came to the novel's famed "meadow scene." Apparently, critics agree with the fans when it comes to Kristen Stewarts performance. Most of the critics remarked that her lack of emotion didn't capture the true character of the Bella from the story. Critics overwhelmingly felt that Facinelli as Dr. Carlisle Cullen was a makeup hack job, and special effects received low marks all around. Needless to say, regardless of any poor production that might have gone into the film, it still remains as a cultural phenomenon, even several months after the initial release of the film.

Reviews of Twilight the Novel

The Twilight series started with the novel of the same name. Twilight hit several top literary lists including Publisher's Weekly best book of the year and, of course, the New York Times bestseller list. For the most part, critics commented regarding the book as follows.

  • Responded positively to Meyer's writing style
  • High marks for suspense
  • Low marks for some cliche descriptions of romantic moments
  • Responded positively to the unique spin on an old genre
  • Remarked that characters were well developed and realistic

Most critics agree that the storyline is very different from other vampire novels or movies.

Final Words

The majority of young teens and young women throughout the world have fallen in love with this Vampire love story. The mixture of a poignant love story, a dangerous yet gentle vampire heartthrob, and the clumsy Bella which every girl can identify with, all makes for a powerful recipe that keeps readers stuck to the pages until they are finished reading every last word.
