Underworld
From LoveToKnow Sci-Fi
Underworld is Gothic Chic.
Meet Selene
Selene is a Death Dealer—a highly trained killer. Her primary purpose is to kill the Lycan werewolves and protect the humans from their blood-thirsty ways. She is also a petite vampire with full lips and prefers form-fitting black leather to formal gowns, who can drop from tall building and land on her feet, ready fight.
Selene is played by Kate Beckinsale, who has also appeared in such movies as Van Helsing, Pearl Harbor, The Aviator, and Serendipity. She is now married to Len Wiseman, the writer and director of Underworld.
Meet Michael
Michael Corvin is a doctor. He saves lives; at least he did until he was bitten by a Lycan and then infused with vampire blood to create the first known vampire/werewolf hybrid. The Lycans want to use him in a complex plot to win the war of vampire versus werewolf.
Michael is played by Scott Speedman, who is probably best known for his role as Ben Covington from the television series “Felicity”.
Michael and Selene
Together, sparks fly as Selene sets out to save Michael’s life from the werewolves who want to use him as a pawn and from the vampires who want to kill him because he is half Lycan. While fighting for survival, Michael struggles to adjust to the concept of immortal creatures living among humans, and Selene struggles with her own growing attraction to Michael—now a Lycan and her sworn enemy.
Underworld: The Movie
Underworld is a low-budget movie created and directed by small-time music video director Len Wisemen. It was released in 2003 and did not do well at the box office but amassed a following through DVD sales; so much so that Underworld: Evolution was released in 2006.
Underworld is a modern day, urban tale of a sophisticated coven of mansion-dwelling vampires hunting intercity, gang-like werewolves with high tech weapons and superhuman skills. Meanwhile, the vampire leader Kraven, played by the charismatic Shane Brolly, is collaborating with werewolf leader Lucian, played by Michael Sheen, to destroy the vampire elders and provide Lucian with the revenge he has been seeking since his vampire lover was destroyed before his eyes by her own kind.
The success of the movie can be attributed to the overall gothic feel of the movie and the amazing chemistry between Beckinsale and Speedman. The plot works from the outer edge inward to explain how vampires came into being and how they have survived throughout the centuries, living just under human radar. It explores how anger and hatred can grow and spread to such a degree that no one really knows why an enemy is an enemy, only that he is. It is also a look at layers of deception as power hunger Kraven betrays his own kind as easily as he hides the betrayals of his superiors.
Underworld Soundtrack
The Underworld soundtrack was produced by Danny Lohner of Nine Inch Nails. It is an amazing mix of music ranging from dark and brooding to full out heading banging thrillers performed by a wide range of great talent. It is designed to assure that anyone who enjoyed the movie is likely to find something they like about the soundtrack.
